Olympique Marseille are readying a January raid for wantaway Leicester City winger Riyad Mahrez. The Leicester Mercury reports the French club are confident that a deal can be reached with the Foxes at £26m, some £6m lower than the former Premier League champions demanded in the summer.
The 26-year-old Algeria international made it clear he wanted to leave during the summer, handing in a transfer request to force a move through to Roma. However, the Italians fell short of Leicester’s valuation and Mahrez remained at the King Power Stadium.
His performances this season belie any unhappiness at his situation. Two goals and two assists in his last four games is the form which saw him crowned Footballer of the Year during the Foxes title-winning season. He created Jamie Vardy’s opening goal in the 2 – 0 win over Everton yesterday.
In the summer of 2016, he was heavily linked with a move to Arsenal or Chelsea, neither of whom followed up their interest last year, much to Mahrez’s disappointment.
A return to the French league would suit the Algerian who joined Leicester from Le Havre in January 2014. With Marseille currently 5th in Ligue Un, L’OM are on course to offer Mahrez the Champions League football he craves.
