Arsenal are ready to launch a sensational bid to sign Barcelona goalkeeper Marc-Andre Ter Stegen, claims the Daily Express.

The 25-year-old German established himself as the Blaugrana first-choice last season with former Ajax ‘keeper Jasper Cillessen failing to dislodge him.

Ernesto Valverde, the new Camp Nou coach, has been impressed by Ter Stegen’s form and the former Monchengladbach custodian signed a new deal keeping him in Barcelona until 2022. The contract included a €180m release clause.

Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger is a keen admirer of Ter Stegen. Petr Cech, 35, is coming toward the end of his career and has been criticised in the English media for recent mistakes.

His understudy, David Ospina, 28, is expected to leave the Emirates next summer with concerns that his lack of match action is damaging his Colombia international career.

Wenger knows he needs to add a long-term option for his first choice with the club’s third string goalkeeper Emi Martinez, 25, still remarkably inexperienced with just 53 first team appearances to his name.

Many supporters favour signing promising English youngster Jack Butland who is seen as Joe Hart’s success in the England goal. However, with Jordan Pickford, 23, moving from Sunderland to Everton for £30m, Arsenal believe Stoke City will want more for the 24-year-old Butland.

The Arsenal manager is keen on securing a replacement but only with perceived value for money being achieved.
