Andre Gomes’ future in FC Barcelona remains very much up in the air at the moment.
Apparently, the Portuguese playmaker does not seem to have a big role in Ernesto Valverde’s team this season, and there has been a lot of talk of Barca selling him in the near future in order to increase the team’s budget. However, one of the biggest candidates to acquire the Portugal international has seemingly dropped out of the race.
According to a report from Mundo Deportivo, Juventus have withdrawn their interest in Andre Gomes, leaving Tottenham Hotspur with a clear path to acquire the midfielder. Even though Gomes started in Barcelona’s win against Athletic Bilbao this past weekend, he is not more than a backup option for Valverde due to the presence of players such as Ivan Rakitic, Sergio Busquets, Andres Iniesta and Paulinho, among others.
It is unclear how Gomes would fit within Tottenham’s tactical scheme, though. While he can operate as a central midfielder or as an attacking midfielder, he has been playing the past few years on a wider role and he might not be fast or athletic enough to assume that role in the Premier League. Plus, one of his most criticised aspects is his lack of pace and intensity – two traits that are needed to thrive in England.
Gomes’ contract runs out in the summer of 2021.
