Athletic Bilbao did not waste any time looking for a replacement to fill the void on their defensive line.
Shortly after Manchester City signed Aymeric Laporte, Bilbao knew they needed to upgrade their defence to offset the loss of their star player, and that is exactly what they have done with the arrival of Inigo Martinez, who joins the side from Real Sociedad.
Martinez was a reported target for both Real Madrid and FC Barcelona this past summer, but both sides failed to complete the move. And now several Spanish outlets are reporting that Bilbao have finalised a move for the 26-year-old.
Per reports, Bilbao have triggered Martinez’s €32 million release clause, and all that is left in the deal is to agree personal terms with Martinez. In fact, he is expected to sign a long-term deal with the San Mames outfit in the coming days.
Martinez is no Laporte by any means, but he is still a competent defender and someone who is more than capable to slide into a starting spot as soon as he signs with his new side. And considering Athletic’s policy to sign only Basque players, Martinez was clearly the top option available on the market.
