Having been determined to undermine their own transfer dealings by attempting to swap Michy Batshuayi, 24, for Fernando Llorente, 32, the Blues are now settling on Olivier Giroud as the solution to the problem of their misfiring frontline.
The Arsenal striker is seen as a pivotal figure in the Gunners pursuit of Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, 28. Borussia Dortmund have agreed a deal with the north London club but won’t sanction a move unless they can sign a replacement striker.
Arsenal wanted to send Giroud to the Bundesliga club but the France international rejected the initial move when Chelsea made their interest clear. Dortmund switched their attention to Batshuayi and are in talks with the Blues over a deal.
It’s given the defending Premier League champions the chance to negotiate a deal with Arsenal although they baulked at the Gunners £35m price tag. Instead, a fee of £15m has been agreed with Brazil defender David Luiz going along for the ride as well.
The 30-year-old defender has fallen out of favour with Chelsea boss Antonio Conte and a sale is seen as the only viable outcome if the centre-back isn’t to spend the majority of this season sitting on the bench.
