Samuel Umtiti joined Barcelona almost two seasons ago and has always looked like a long-term core piece for the Catalan club. He is the starting centre-back next to Gerard Pique, but the idea was that he would eventually become the leader of the defence once Pique departed.
However, that might never become a reality. According to a report from Catalan daily newspaper Sport, the France international is reportedly considering a summer exit once the current season ends.
That report indicates that Manchester United are ready to break the bank in order to land Umtiti, since Jose Mourinho has identified the former Lyon star as the perfect piece to improve the defensive line. The Red Devils are not the only team interested in him, though, as other European top sides are also considering a move for Umtiti.
The big problem here is that Umtiti wants to upgrade his contract, but Barca are not ready to give him a raise just yet. Therefore, it seems like the former Lyon star will try to leave the club in case Los Blaugranas do not meet his terms.
The 24-year-old defender has featured in 46 Liga matches for Barcelona, while also becoming an important piece on the team in the Champions League and looking like a starter in the upcoming World Cup for France.
Umtiti’s current deal runs until June 2021 and contains a €60 million release clause.
