Pep Guardiola is determined to reunite with Bayern Munich defender Jerome Boateng this summer, a talkSPORT report claims.

The Germany international made 16 Premier League appearances in 2010/11 for the Citizens before joining Bayern in a €13.5m deal. It wasn’t the best of times for the West Berlin-born defender as his time at the Etihad almost ended before it began when he collided with a drinks cart on a flight and aggravated a tendon injury in his knee.

The defence has proven the Achilles heel of an otherwise spectacular Manchester City season. The signing of Ederson, 24, proved a Guardiola masterstroke but the Brazilian has been left unprotected at times by his centre-backs.

29-year-old Boateng signed a new deal with the Bavarians two years ago and is under contract until 2021.

Bayern would likely want a fee in the region of £50m for the defender who is a fixture with the Germany national squad. To date, he has 69 caps and was a member of the 2014 World Cup winning squad.

The only fly in the ointment comes with the claim that Manchester United are also monitoring his situation. Jose Mourinho is looking to sign an experienced partner for Eric Bailly in the centre of his defence, with England international Chris Smalling then dropping to the bench.
