Jose Mourinho’s free-spending days at Manchester United show no sign of ending. This time though, the club are going to pay Bastian Schweinsteiger, 31, to leave.
The German has two years left on his current deal and is in no mood to be shunted out of the Old Trafford door. Talks between the midfielder and Mourinho proved inconclusive but Schweinsteiger believed to be one of eight players the Portuguese wants to shed from his first team squad.
Since signing from Bayern Munich, Schweinsteiger has made 19 appearances for United but spent a greater part of the end of last season in the treatment room. Despite recovering in time for Euro 2016, he was only used as a substitute by Joachim Löw as Germany were knocked out in the semi-finals by hosts France.
Recently married to tennis star Ana Ivanovic, Schweinsteiger has attracted the attention of Paris St Germain with the French club keen to capitalise commercially on that sporting union. It also offers the former Bayern captain a slower pace of football after he was seen to be struggling with the frenetic energy of the Premier League.
United are well aware that he does not intend to walk away quietly from Old Trafford and fully expect pay his contract up to free up space from their wage bill to accommodate the impending arrival of Paul Pogba, 23.
