Manchester City’s pursuit of Leroy Sane, 20, is drawing to a close.
The Premier League giants have agreed personal terms with the winger and have offered Sane a four-year deal according to Bild. The winger interrupted his holiday in the USA to finalise negotiations.
City are now set to agree a deal with his current club, Schalke 04. An opening bid of £35m is expected in Gelsenkirchen and that will be enough to open talks although the Bundesliga club still want closer to £42m.
If the German international stays at the club until next summer, a release clause of around £37m would come into force so Schalke are keen to cash in on their prized asset now whose current contract runs until 2017.
Sane made fleeting appearances at this summer’s Euro 2016 tournament having made his international debut in the ill-fated friendly against France in Paris in November 2015. Since then he has added another three caps to his name.
It would take City’s summer spending to over £100m with the potential to almost double if deals for John Stones, 22, and Joshua Kimmich, 21, are completed. The expectations at the club, already high with Guardiola’s arrival, would increase significantly having undertaken that level of investment.
The warning bells would also ring at their Premier League rivals. City are determined to challenge for this season’s title.
