Chelsea have won the race for 25 year-old N’Golo Kante’s heart with the French international reported by Sky Sports to have passed his medical in west London last night.
The midfielder steadfastly refused to be drawn on his future until Euro 2016 had finished and with that over, events moved swiftly with Chelsea agreeing personal terms with the player last week. A £32m offer has been made to Leicester and both clubs expect negotiations to be completed over the weekend.
Blues manager Antonio Conte has, according to reports, already telephoned the midfielder to welcome him to Stamford Bridge and underline how important he sees the player as part of his rejuvenation of Chelsea’s fortunes.
Former Leicester and England star Gary Lineker was swift to react on Twitter, thanking Kante for his service to the club. Previously, Lineker had warned Jamie Vardy, 29, against making a move to Arsenal when the Gunners moved to sign the England striker.
Kante was the lynchpin of Leicester’s title-winning side, patrolling the midfield with a quiet authority. Many observers were surprised when he didn’t win either of the Footballer of the Year awards last season.
It was an ultimately disappointing summer for the French international as suspension robbed him of his place in the Euro 2016 final and he could only watch on helplessly during France’s shock single-goal defeat to Portugal.
