Wolfsburg have admitted defeat in their attempts to keep Julian Draxler, 22, in the Bundesliga and are ready to agree to a £55m sale.
Long linked with the player, Arsenal are set to make a bid for his services in an explosive week for the Gunners.
Searching for a central striker to vie with Olivier Giroud, 29, in the starting line-up, the north London club are also in talks with Lyon over Alexandre Lacazette, 25. Jean-Claude Aulas flushed out Arsenal’s interest by recently claiming that Arsene Wenger hadn’t mentioned the player when they met during this summer’s Euro 2016 tournament.
The former French international missed the cut for Didier Deschamps squad but will still cost in the region of £42m as Arsenal desperately seek to solve their goalscoring problem.
When Giroud went 15 games without a goal, the Gunners title challenge vanished. Wenger is under considerable pressure in the last year of his contract to dip into the club’s significant cash reserves and invest in the squad.
Draxler is friends with Mesut Özil and the pair were key players during Germany’s run to the Euro 2016 semi-finals. The Wolfsburg winger would allow Alexis Sanchez to play on the right in a pacey Gunners attack with Draxler preferring the left hand wide role.
Arsenal were criticised last season for being too predictable and ponderous in attack. Wenger is determined to see a more dynamic style of play on the pitch with both Draxler and Lacazette offering pace and guile in front of goal.
