John Stones, 22, may finally get his wish to move to Manchester City with the Premier League’s richest club set to offer £53m to seal the deal. It will take Pep Guardiola’s spending over the £100m mark this summer with Ilkay Gundogan, 24, and Nolito, 29, already signed.
The highly-rated England international has told new Everton boss Ronald Koeman that he wants to leave Goodison Park this summer and that City is his only destination. It came as a huge disappointment to the Dutchman who had not given up hope of persuading the centre back to stay and continue his development on Merseyside.
But Stones is determined to go, clear that he is ready to make the next step in his career.
It’s a long way from the raw 18 year-old snapped up from Barnsley in a £3m deal. Unscathed from England’s abject failure in France this summer, Stones is keen to fight his way into the starting line-up having failed to play a minute in Euro 2016. He believes that moving to a high-profile Champions League club is the best way to achieve that dream.
