PSG have finally acquired the centre-back they were hoping for. However, it’s not the player they were rumoured to be targeting.
The Ligue 1 champions and French giants were keen to make a move on Bayern Munich’s Jerome Boateng and while they can still complete a move for the Germany international, they went ahead and snapped Thilo Kehrer, from Schalke 04, on a transfer that no one saw coming.
The Schalke 04 defender has always been considered as one of the most promising centre-backs in the Bundesliga, and he established himself as a regular in the Bundesliga during the 2017-18 season. Now he will have a harder time trying to get himself into the regular starting XI on PSG, but he has all the tools to become a mainstay in the club sooner than later.
Kehrer, 21, has 45 Bundesliga appearances in his career. He has also won nine caps with the Germany U21 side, and it seems it’s a matter of time before he becomes a Germany international. Playing at PSG on a regular basis would certainly boost his chances of doing so.
This past season, the former Schalke 04 centre-back registered 28 presences for Schalke 04, scoring three times, delivering two assists and picking up four yellow cards in the process. He is a versatile player too, since he can play at centre-back, right-back and defensive midfielder with equal ease.
