Premier League Watford are preparing a January move for Getafe goalkeeper Vincente Guaita, reports the Independent on Sunday.

The 30-year-old Spaniard is believed to be keen to leave the La Liga club. His contract includes a £7m-release clause, but the Hornets are reportedly in a position for significantly less.

Heurelho Gomes, 36, has been Watford’s saviour on a number of occasions but is in the twilight of his career. Hornets boss Marco Silva is keen to bring in experienced cover for the former Tottenham Hotspur goalkeeper.

Watford are on a slide at the moment with yesterday’s home defeat to struggling Swansea City dragging them toward the relegation zone. Silva, himself under pressure, is determined to bring about a change in fortunes after the Hertfordshire club’s good start to the season.

Guaita began his career with Valencia and made 91 appearances for Los Che until he joined Getafe in 2014 to further his career. Incredibly, he kept three clean sheets in four December matches as La Liga headed toward its Christmas break, including the 1 – 0 victory over former club, Valencia.

The Premier League outfit faces competition from Besiktas, who are also monitoring Guaita’s situation although it is reported that the player prefers a move to England.
