Arsenal are ready to launch a sensational bid for Chelsea defender David Luiz, reports the Sunday Express.
The Gunners are tracking the 30-year-old who has fallen from grace with Blues manager, Antonio Conte.
Luiz has returned to training with the first team squad after suffering a knee injury but faces a fight on his hands to win back his place in the starting line-up as Chelsea climbed to second in the table.
With Per Mertesacker set to assume the role of Academy manager in 2018, Arsenal boss Arsène Wenger is keen to add an experienced player to the heart of his defence. The north London club are showing the usual defensive frailties this season and are flitting between a flat back four and back three to compensate.
Shkodran Mustafi, a £35m signing from Valencia, has failed to impress Wenger and was close to leaving last summer but a move to Juventus fell through when the Gunners couldn’t find a suitable replacement.
With both Calum Chambers and Rob Holding, both 22, lacking experience, Luiz would be a strong addition to the Arsenal squad. However, the defending Italian champions are also interested in Luiz and selling to a foreign club holds more appeal to Chelsea than strengthening a rival for the English Champions League spots.
