The Hammers want 25-year-old Jonjo Shelvey and are ready to offer £12m for the Romford-born England international.
According to the local Newcastle paper, the Magpies are open to the idea of selling Shelvey who shone during last season’s charge to the Championship title but has failed to deliver so far in the Premier League.
Sent-off twice already this season, there is a growing sense on Tyneside that the former Liverpool midfielder needs a new challenge although Newcastle will not sell unless replacements are incoming.
Expectations of Shelvey were high when he broke through at Charlton Athletic but spells at Liverpool and Swansea before his £12m move to Newcastle, failed to deliver on that promise. A move to the East End, close to his hometown may be the spark to reignite his career.
Certainly, any ambitions he has of returning to the England fold are dimmed by his current lack of discipline and poor performances. It’s been over two years since he earned his last cap with a Man of the Match display in the 6 – 0 romp in San Marino.
