Inter Milan and AC Milan are set to battle for three midfielders that could be made available in the transfer market during January next year. These are Ivan Rakitic, Arturo Vidal and Luka Modric.
FC Barcelona have acknowledged they must earn some fresh transfer funds, and both the Croatian and the Chilean have been made available. Antonio Conte has been quite vocal on his desire to manage Vidal once again, while Rakitic has been heavily linked with an Inter switch for quite some time. However, Milan want to enter the race for both players.
One of Milan’s weaknesses ahead of this season has been the play of their central midfielders. Both Rakitic and Vidal would improve that area of the pitch considerably.
Modric has also been linked with a Serie A move. He doesn’t appear to be as important as he was in the past for Zinedine Zidane, and Real Madrid would be open to let him go before he becomes “too cheap”. Once again, the two Milan-based teams are keen to push for the 2018 Ballon D’Or winner.
Considering Modric is 34, Rakitic is 31 and Vidal is 32, all three would be “win-now” signings. With that in mind, expect Inter to have a slight edge over Milan simply because of their current situation in the standings.
