Yet to make their marquee signing of the summer, Barcelona are planning on a future without Neymar Jr., 25, who is destined to move to Paris St Germain. While Philippe Coutinho, also 25, is their prime target, they have also sounded out representatives of Manchester United midfielder, Ander Herrera, 27, about a return to the Primera Division.
It’s put the Old Trafford hierarchy on red alert, according to the Daily Express, with the former Athletic Bilbao star entering the final 12 months of his current deal, although United hold an option to extend by a further 12 months if they so choose.
That has to be a realistic option; Herrera has been a lynchpin in the United midfield over the past two seasons. He made a difficult start following his £28m move from Bizkaia club but adapted to the English game, making himself indispensable to Jose Mourinho’s plans.
Happily for United, Herrera is keen to stay at Old Trafford. For Mourinho, it gives him stability in the centre of midfield and with the club returning to the Champions League, plenty of experience upon which to call. Whilst winning the trophy is beyond them next season, a new era with the energetic Spaniard at the heart is about to dawn.
