Anderlecht sporting director Herman van Holsbeeck is resigned to losing 22-year-old starlet Leander Dendoncker and let it be known that his price is between €25 – 35m.
Speaking to Belgian news outlet Het Belang van Limburg, he said “We want to cherish him, but if a club is willing to pay between €25m and €35m, we have a problem.”
That club is believed to be Manchester United. Dendoncker scored in the Constant Vanden Stock Stadium when the two sides drew 1 – 1 in the first leg of last season’s Europa League quarter-final. United eventually progressed with an extra-time 2 – 1 win in the second leg. The Belgian international impressed Jose Mourinho, leading to the speculation that a move for the youngster was on the cards.
The defensive midfielder is seen as an ideal replacement if Ander Herrera, 27, leaves for Barcelona this summer. That Dendoncker has just two international caps underlines the depth of talent at Roberto Martinez’s disposal.
van Holsbeeck knows the midfielder’s future lies elsewhere, promising that the club would let him leave if he stayed with them for one further season. Having seen a number of the Belgian giants’ stars leave down the years, Dendoncker understands the club is true to its word.
However, with a place at next year’s World Cup at stake, does he have the patience?
