Liverpool might have agreed a record-breaking fee with RBS Leipzig for 22-year-old Naby Keita but they are to miss out on Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain with the 24-year-old Arsenal midfielder set to undergo a medical before joining Chelsea this week. The Guardian reports the two clubs agreeing a £35m fee for the England international who is out of contract next summer.
The Gunners are in disarray at the moment with two-thirds of the current squad requiring contract renewals before June 2019. Add into that the 0 – 4 drubbing at Anfield which many supporters are calling a worse hammering than the 2 – 8 capitulation at Old Trafford in 2012, and there is a volatile mix brewing at the Emirates.
Oxlade-Chamberlain was severely criticised for a lack of effort in Sunday’s humiliation leading seasoned observers to believe he had already agreed a deal to move to Stamford Bridge. With Alexis Sanchez, 28, also likely to leave the Emirates this week, the Gunners face a difficult time replenishing their squad.
Chelsea boss Antonio Conte is expected to use the England international in a wing-back role, as well as occasionally in the central midfield role he craves. Oxlade-Chamberlain will undergo a medical when he reports for international duty at St George’s Park.
