Southampton defender Cedric Soares is a wanted man and Spurs joined the chase. The Lilywhites joined Juventus and Barcelona in watching the Portuguese full back with interest, according to the Daily Mirror.
Kyle Walker is on his way to Manchester City with the two clubs close to agreeing a £50m fee. The England right back is expected to report to pre-season training at the Etihad.
Mauricio Pochettino, the former Southampton manager, is keen to bring Soares to White Hart Lane. Pochettino left for Spurs a year before Soares moved to St Mary’s in 2015.
However, Spurs face strong competition for his signature. Juventus, set to lose Dani Alves to Manchester City, are ready to swoop for a member of Portugal’s 2016 European Championship winning squad.
Currently with Portugal at the 2017 Confederations Cup, Soares scored his first goal for his country during the recent 2 – 2 draw with Mexico.
Favourites to land the defender are Barcelona. The Catalans prefer Hector Bellerin but are reliant upon the young right back forcing a move away from Arsenal. That’s unlikely to happen and the Gunners won’t sell a prize asset with the futures of Alexis Sanchez and Mesut Özil undecided.
Southampton’s new boss Mauricio Pellegrino is reportedly keen to keep Soares and the club are willing to give him another new contract. With just a year of his current deal passed, the Saints know that if he wants to leave, they can make a tidy profit on the £4.7m they paid to Sporting Lisbon.
