Barcelona have been linked with several midfielders looking towards the January transfer window. And even though they are quite unlikely to make a move for any player once 2019 comes around, there is no question that they remain their options open for a potential summer transfer.
Some of the names that have been mentioned include Adrien Rabiot and Frenkie de Jong, but the latter is becoming less and less of a possibility since Barca do not want to get into a bidding war with high-spending teams such as Manchester City and PSG. Instead, Los Blaugranas have now shifted their focus into making an approach for Pablo Fornals.
The talented playmaker might only be 22 years old, but he already has tons of experience in Spain’s top flight, and already debuted with the Spain national team. He’s currently featuring for Villarreal, and his impressive performances have certainly caught the eye of the Catalan giants.
Playing time might be hard to come by for him at Barca, though. Los Blaugranas already have a crowded midfield line with Sergio Busquets, Ivan Rakitic, Arthur, Arturo Vidal and Philippe Coutinho essentially vying for three starting spots.
Fornals has made 12 appearances in La Liga for Villarreal this season, registering one goal and one assist. He also has four starts in the UEFA Europa League, where he has contributed with two goals and one assist.
