Everton are set to launch a January raid on Arsenal as their spending spree shows no sign of ending. According to the Liverpool Echo, the Toffees will offer the Gunners £40m for French international Olivier Giroud.
The 30-year-old rejected a move to Merseyside in the summer when reports claimed his wife refused to move away from London. Giroud, relegated to the Arsenal bench for Premier League matches, is conscious that his place in the French national squad is under threat, not least from Arsenal’s 26-year-old record signing Alexandre Lacazette.
He said recently that “it’s true I was close to leaving because I wanted to play.” Fast-forward to now and his situation has changed little. The seeds of discontent are being sown and Giroud may be more open to a move to the north-west.
Ronald Koeman recently vented his frustration at the club’s inability to replace Romelu Lukaku after the 24-year-old moved to Manchester United in the summer. Everton’s stuttering start to the season underlines the need for investment in an experienced striker.
Whether Arsenal would be prepared to enter into talks before next summer knowing that they could lose Alexis Sanchez, 28, this winter as Manchester City are thought to be ready to offer a cheeky £20m for the Chilean.
