PSG reject Chelsea’s £41.5m Edinson Cavani transfer bid

Paris St. Germain have reportedly rejected a £41.5m bid from Chelsea for Edinson Cavani, 29.

The French champions are willing to negotiate, according to Le 10 Sport, but want a fee closer to £66.5m for the Uruguayan international.

It’s the strongest sign yet that Diego Costa, 27, is set to return to Atletico Madrid this summer.

Cavani recently rejected a move to China which would have made him the world’s highest paid player. New PSG manager Unai Emery, wants the former Napoli striker to fill the central role vacated by 34 year-old Zlatan Ibrahimovic’s move to Manchester United but Cavani wants a new challenge in another European league.

He has been a resounding success in Serie A and Ligue Un, and has eyed a move to the Premier League before. Arsenal were heavily linked with him last summer but were unable to tempt the French champions into selling.

With 185 goals in his last 286 club appearances, Cavani has the free-scoring pedigree which Chelsea have sorely missed since Didier Drogba left the club.

Costa courts controversy more regularly than he finds the net and has been unsettled since Jose Mourinho left the club under a cloud last season. In regular contact with the hierarchy at the Vincente Calderon, a return to La Liga this summer is becoming more likely.
