Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola is showing no signs of resting on his laurels and if a Daily Mail report is correct, will be strengthening his midfield this summer with one of Serie A’s top performers this season.
Napoli closed the gap to Juventus with a 1 – 0 win in Turin on Sunday night with Jorginho, their 26-year-old midfield dynamo, producing one of his best performances of the season.
It reaffirmed City’s belief that he is the natural successor to compatriot Fernandinho, 32, who is expected to play a smaller role as the newly-crowned Premier League champions look to make up for their disappointing Champions League exit at the hands of Liverpool.
Jorginho spent three seasons with Verona before joining Napoli in 2014. Since then, he has made 153 appearances for the club, scoring six goals. He impressed Guardiola during the two Champions League meetings between the two clubs earlier this season, although he was spared one of the Spaniard’s famous pep-talks as he left the pitch.
A new contract was offered to Jorginho by Napoli but with interest from City and local rivals Manchester United, the five-times capped Italy international is weighing up his options.
City, the report claims, met with his agent twice in recent weeks and are confident that a deal can be reached with the Partenopei during the summer.
