A member of Brazil’s Olympic gold medal winning squad, Barbosa has been linked with a host of Europe’s elite clubs this summer. With the Rio Games now over, it’s expected that the striker, known as ‘Gabigol’ in his homeland, will be the latest starlet to leave Serie A.
Gabriel Jesus, 19, has signed for Manchester City before being loaned back to Palmeiras for the remainder of the domestic season. A similar deal for Barbosa is Santos’ preferred option.
And the player’s as well. Speaking in the aftermath of Brazil’s penalty shootout win over Germany in the Gold Medal match, Gabigol claimed that to play alongside Neymar Jr, 24, in Barcelona “would truly be beautiful”.
United were in pole position to sign the youngster, who says he hasn’t made up his mind over where his future lies but were facing strong competition from Leicester City and Inter Milan.
Barbosa’s admission may see Barcelona re-enter the race for his signature although manager Luis Enrique recently claimed he was happy with his squad and it was unlikely that anyone else would be joining the Catalans this summer.
