Jose Mourinho is ready to drop the first bombshell of his Old Trafford reign with a £50m bid for Arsenal’s Aaron Ramsey, 25.
Manchester United are becoming increasingly frustrated with Borussia Dortmund’s intransigence over the sale of Henrikh Mkhitaryan, 27, and are looking elsewhere for alternatives.
Ramsey has been Wales outstanding player as they topped Group B at Euro 2016 ahead of England, capping off fine performances with a goal in the 3–0 win over Russia.
Armenian international Mkhitaryan is Mourinho’s preferred target but faced with an exodus of their stars, the German club is refusing to acquiesce to the player’s wish to move to Old Trafford. His agent, Mino Raiola, is said to have thrown a chair in frustration during acrimonious exchanges with Dortmund’s CEO, Hans-Joachim Waltze.
Ramsey rejected a move to United when he left Cardiff City in 2008. The player and his family were impressed when Arsenal flew them to meet Arsene Wenger in Austria at the European Championships. Despite their website trumpeting his signing, he shunned Manchester United in favour of a move to the capital.
Ramsey was criticised by Arsenal supporters for his performances last season and scored just six goals in his 40 appearances for the Gunners. Toward the end of the campaign, he lost his place in the starting line-up with manager Arsene Wenger becoming frustrated with his misfiring midfielder.
Even so, it would be a major surprise if the north London club would entertain selling to a rival. The Arsenal board won’t have forgotten the hostility directed towards them with the sale of Robin van Persie, 32, four years ago. A repeat with Ramsey seems highly unlikely.
