Real Madrid have been grabbing headlines due to their transfer activity ahead of this summer’s transfer window. However, FC Barcelona are ready to shock the football world since a report coming out of Spain has indicated the Liga title holders want to sign BOTH Neymar and Antoine Griezmann in the coming weeks.
This might be easier said that done, but there’s logic behind this move. Luis Suarez is not getting any younger and Lionel Messi is also past the 30-year-old barrier. Therefore, what better way to add long-term replacements than to sign two of the best strikers in the world at the moment?
Griezmann has already said he is leaving Atletico, and Neymar has shown willingness to return to Barcelona as he’s not happy with the way things have been at PSG of late. In fact, Spanish outlet Sport believe Barca and Griezmann have already come to an agreement over a transfer, which should be completed once the France international’s release clause drops from €200 million to €120m on July 1.
The biggest issue here lies on the massive cost that it would require to sign both players. Barcelona would have to offload several players to have enough funds – Philippe Coutinho, Ousmane Dembele and Andre Gomes, just to name a few – in order to purchase both players. Coutinho could be included on a potential swap deal for Neymar, but nothing has been set in stone yet.
Aside from the transfer fees, wages could be a factor as well. Considering Neymar earns €38M per season at PSG while Griezmann is said to be on €25M, both players would have to take massive pay cuts in order to land at Camp Nou. Will they accept that? If they do, there’s no question Barcelona would shock the football world.
