Real Madrid Given Courtois Chase Boost

Chelsea goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois did little to convince the club or its supporters that he sees his future in south-west London, according to the Daily Telegraph.

Speaking to the media ahead of the Blues Champions League tie in Azerbaijan, the 25-year-old declared that no progress has been made in agreeing a new deal. Talks, the Belgium international said, will not recommence until the end of the season.

It leaves the defending Premier League champions in a precarious position. Courtois’ contract expires in 2019 and in a little over twelve months time, the Belgium international is free to talk to overseas clubs.

Real Madrid‘s interest in Courtois is well-known to the point that Chelsea tried to deter the Spanish champions by slapping a £70m fee on the goalkeeper’s head. Before last summer, it was a deterrent; now, in light of the spiralling fees elsewhere, it’s a bargain.

Courtois spent two years on loan at Atletico Madrid and is believed to be keen on a return to La Liga. Real, however, are also monitoring 27-year-old David De Gea’s situation at Manchester United.

The Spanish international is keen on a move to the Bernabeu and like Courtois, his contract expires in 2019.

Los Merengues are in the enviable position where two of the best goalkeepers in the world are keen to join them. It’s a question of which one will cost the least.
