One of the most sought-after players in Europe is Ajax’s midfielder Frenkie De Jong. The 21-year-old Dutch international has been long rumoured to be a target for FC Barcelona, but Los Blaugranas might have some competition since Manchester City are also keen to land him, according to a report from the Daily Mail.
There is no question that the Netherlands international fits the Pep Guardiola mould, so much so that he might be an even better fit for Barcelona. However, the former Barca and Bayern Munich tactician wants to lure the youngster to the Etihad Stadium. Perhaps the prospect of working for such a highly-respected manager could entice him to move to England?
This is not the first time Guardiola goes after a central midfielder. He went after Jorginho this summer, but he couldn’t sign the Italy international, who joined Chelsea instead. As a result, there is no question Pep will be in the market and ready to pounce should the opportunity arise.
For what is worth, De Jong is an interesting player and one that should fit quite well within the Premier League pace. He is only 21 years old but can fit lots of positions, even operating as a ball-playing centre back if needed. That tactical versatility could be a huge plus for him going forward. So now it only remains to be seen whether he will move to England or Spain.
