The Gunners want Sevilla midfielder Ever Banega, 30, to take over in the centre of the park should the Wales international decide he is leaving the Emirates.
It will be one of the newly-appointed head of football Raul Sanllehi’s first signings for the club following the departure of CEO Ivan Gazidis to AC Milan this week.
Formerly with Barcelona, Sanllehi possesses an impressive contacts book from his time in Catalunya with Spain and South America prominent among them. He previously oversaw the moves of Ivan Rakitic and Aleix Vidal from Sevilla to the Camp Nou.
It’s understood Banega has a £18m release clause in his contract and Arsenal will move in January instead of waiting until he can leave on a free transfer next summer. That suggests that while the Gummers are prepared to allow Aaron Ramsey to leave, they won’t let it happen on a free transfer in June next year.
The Welshman is attracting attention from Chelsea and Manchester United with a fee of £30m mooted. Meanwhile, claims emerged AC Milan may also look at him following Gazidis’ arrival at the San Siro.
