Borussia Dortmund have lost several important players over the past few years. Robert Lewandowski, Mats Hummels, Ilkay Gündogan, Shinji Kagawa and Mario Götze are some of the big-name players that have left the side in recent years, although the latter two returned to the squad.
Most recently, it was Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang who left Dortmund to join Arsenal during the January transfer window. And one that could soon follow his footsteps is no other than Greek centre-back Sokratis Papastathopoulis, commonly known as ‘Sokratis’.
The tough-as-nails defender proved to be a good signing for Dortmund after joining from Werder Bremen roughly five years ago, and he has emerged as a key figure on the team’s defensive scheme. But with only one year left in his current deal and Dortmund going practically nowhere, Sokratis is reportedly keen to leave for greener pastures.
Borussia Dortmund is keen to sign the 29-year-old to a new contract before his current one expires, but that’s not going to be easy since Manchester United and Juventus are both keen to make a push for the Greek defender.
If he decides to leave the Signal Iduna Park, however, then Dortmund would earn around €20 million from the sale.
