The Seagulls are embroiled in a relegation battle with goals their biggest problem. Without a prolific striker, Chris Hughton’s side are destined for a long toil to preserve their top-flight status.
However, Brighton face strong competition from Everton although new Toffees boss Sam Allardyce has been told he must sell before he can strengthen his squad following Ronald Koeman’s unrelenting summer spending spree.
Dembele, 21, attracted a lot of attention when Celtic won the fight for his signature from Fulham. Arsenal were the most prominent of his Premier League admirers, but their interest never materialised in a firm bid.
In his first season at Parkhead, Dembele scored 32 goals in 49 appearances as the Bhoys won the Premier League, Scottish Cup and Scottish League Cup in a record-breaking season.
Brighton are ready to offer £18m to secure Dembele’s services, with a 10% sell-on as recognition of the interest from Europe’s elite in the French striker.
The south coast club hope to tempt Dembele with a realistic release clause which will allow him to leave if he lives up to expectations.
While the French squad for next summer is too soon for the Celtic striker, Euro 2020 is likely to see older players such Arsenal’s Olivier Giroud retire from the international scene.
