Tottenham Hotspur are ready to act quickly to bring Espanyol goalkeeper Pau Lopez, 21, to White Hart Lane.
First choice stopper Hugo Lloris, 29, suffered a hamstring injury at Goodison Park during the 1 – 1 opening day meeting with Everton and is out for four weeks. With Michel Worm the only other fit first team squad goalkeeper, Spurs boss Mauricio Pochettino is keen to sign Lopez this week.
Espanyol, the club where Pochettino cut his managerial teeth, are reluctant to sell and are demanding that any suitors meet the £13m release clause in Lopez’s contract.
Tottenham are rumoured to have been looking to pay significantly less with the Spanish press suggesting a fee of £2m.
Lopez was called up to the full Spanish international squad in May for the Euro 2016 warm-up match against Bosnia and Herzegovina. Whilst not capped on that occasion, he is highly thought of in La Liga and expected to challenge David De Gea in coming seasons for a place in the starting line-up.
He has been capped at Under-21 level, as well as playing a representative match for his native Catalunya.
Lopez attracted notoriety for stamping on Lionel Messi during El Derby earlier this year, an offence which was missed by the referee but seen by television viewers.
