Jose Mourinho’s hopes of challenging for the Premier League title suffered a blow when his much-vaunted Real Madrid target Gareth Bale slipped through his fingers.

The Manchester United boss’ plans were holed with Metro reporting that the 29-year-old Wales international held productive talks with new Madrid head coach Julen Lopetegui.

Following the sale of Cristiano Ronaldo and with no star signing imminent, Bale found himself receiving the news he long hoped for: he is an important part of the coach’s plans for next season.

Held back by injury and the side being built around Ronaldo, Bale found himself becoming increasingly marginalised under Zinedine Zidane’s reign.

An outstanding contribution to the Champions League final victory over Liverpool in May – even Ronaldo was awestruck by Bale’s bicicleta – didn’t immediately bring about a change in fortunes. Only Zidane’s resignation shortly after offered a shaft of light.

2018/19 will be his sixth season in the Spanish capital which has brought him 70 goals in 126 La Liga appearances, as well as a host of winner’s medals he could only have dreamt of when he was taunted by Tottenham fans and opponents alike after it took him two years and four months to feature on a winning side for the Lilywhites.

Recent transfer windows saw strong links with Manchester United which if the Metro report is true, will be sunk when Real Madrid officially declare him not for sale.
