Newly-appointed Fulham boss Claudio Ranieri has wasted no time in identifying players he believes the club needs to sign if it is to maintain its’ Premier League status. And according to talkSPORT, Joel Matip is the first one he wants to be signed.
The 27-year-old Cameroon international has featured five times this season for Liverpool in the Premier League this season but remains far from being a first-choice centre-back for the Merseyside club.
However, Ranieri is keen to bring his experience to bear at Craven Cottage as the west London club battles against a swift return to the EFL Championship. This is the Italian’s third stint at a Premier League club, with his most famous being the 5,000/1 title win with Leicester City in 2016. It remains his only major league title to date.
Matip is in his third season at Anfield having forged his reputation in seven seasons with Bundesliga outfit Schalke 04. His contract with Liverpool has two years remaining but the German-born Cameroon international is keen to find regular first-team action.
Fulham won’t have the field all to themselves with Fenerbahce hot on Matip’s trail. The Turkish giants are hoping former Liverpool director of football can use his contacts at the club to broker a deal at Fulham’s expense.
