England goalkeeper Joe Hart, 29, faces fresh questions over his future at Manchester City with reports that Pep Guardiola has sanctioned a move for PSV Eindhoven goalkeeper Jeroen Zoet, 25. A fee of £7m has been mooted for the highly-rated Dutch international.
City scouted the player extensively last season as Zoet kept 13 clean sheets as PSV capitalised on Ajax’s surprising last-day collapse to win the Eriedivisie.
Capped four times by the Dutch, Zoet is expected to challenge for a place in the starting line-up as the Netherlands seek to recover from their disastrous Euro 2016 qualifying campaign which saw them miss out on the finals to Iceland and Czech Republic.
Arsenal and Newcastle United have previously been linked with moves for Zoet who joined PSV as a fifteen year-old. He has since made 102 appearances for the Dutch giants and won back-to-back league titles.
Hart was roundly criticised after his woeful performances for England at Euro 2016. He carried much of the blame for Iceland’s winner in the Round of Sixteen, having let in a similarly weak shot from Gareth Bale in England’s 2 – 1 win over Wales.
Coming on heels of his inconsistency for City last season, Zoet’s signing is a sign that Guardiola won’t tolerate a repeat of that form this season.
