Liverpool joined the race to sign Atletico Madrid full-back Sime Vrsaljko, reports the Daily Mirror.

The Croatia international is determined to leave the Wanda Metropolitano to preserve his place in the country’s Russia 2018 World Cup squad. A regular for his country, the 25-year-old is concerned that he may find himself dropped if he doesn’t play regular first-team football.

Napoli and Manchester City are both monitoring the situation but the paper claims Liverpool are ready to launch a £22m move. Liverpool have already put together a deal for Leipzig’s Naby Keita, 22, Jurgen Klopp is continuing his major overhaul of the Liverpool squad.

Vrsaljko spent three years in Serie A with Genoa and Sassuolo which Napoli believe will count in their favour. However, Liverpool are reported to already be in talks with Atletico over a potential January deal.

Atletico were unwilling to talk to other clubs previously but it’s a sign of Juanfran’s importance to the side that they will now. The Spaniard has nailed down the right-back spot and Vrsaljko is now expendable.

Manchester City are also interested with Pep Guardiola still looking to recruit for his defence, competition for the Croatia international is intense.
