Atletico Madrid manager Diego Simeone is hopeful. Despite his team’s negative run of results to start the season (W1, D1, L1 in the first four matches), he is confident that the side will return back to winning ways. However, that’s not the only concern that is going through his head at the moment.

The Argentinian manager has also stated that he hopes Jan Oblak signs a new contract extension with the club, and also that the club are working in that direction.

The 25-year-old shot-stopper has been very vocal regarding his frustrations with Los Colchoneros over the past few months and at one point, it seemed he was headed to join Chelsea during the final days of the summer transfer window. But Oblak didn’t move and now Simeone wants to make sure he remains as the club’s starting goalkeeper for both the short-term and long-term scenario.

Both Liverpool and Chelsea have been linked with moves for Oblak in the past, but neither of those clubs would be interested now that they have signed Alisson and Kepa, respectively, over the past months. So with an apparent lack of suitors and no real offers for him, maybe Oblak’s best alternative would be to extend his deal with his current side. After all, Atletico remain one of the best teams all over Europe.

The Slovenian keeper has made over 100 appearances for the club since joining back in 2014, but as we look ahead to January and next summer, there could be a string of other big European clubs being in line for a bid.
