The Italian media reports that Napoli were interested in the 22-year-old but are put off by his wage demands which has left the Gunners in pole position.
Having focused on the defence so far this close season, the Gunners are now looking at other areas of the pitch. Midfield is a key area with the futures of Aaron Ramsey and Jack Wilshere both unresolved.
Speaking recently, Samp president Massimo Ferrero said “Lucas Torreira has a release clause. Everyone knows it. Whoever wants to take Torreira will have to work with that release clause; €25m.”
Arsenal are said to be offering more €30m, €5m more than the clause to tempt the Genovese club into accepting an instalment plan. The release clause stipulates the full fee must be paid within 60 days of any transfer being agreed.
Speculation that a deal is imminent increased over the weekend with the arrival of Lovro Majer from Lokomotiv Zagreb. The midfield schemer was crowned Young Player of the Year in his native Croatia.
Torreira’s arrival in north London will be delayed with his inclusion in the Oscar Tabarez’s 23-man Uruguay squad for the World Cup finals.
