Manchester City were handed a massive boost in their pursuit of Napoli star Jorginho, reports talkSPORT.

The 26-year-old midfielder is attracting a lot of attention from Europe’s elite teams for his performances as Partenopei challenge Juventus for the Serie A title.

One of those clubs was City’s bitter local rivals, Manchester United. However, Jose Mourinho’s interest in the Italy international waned as he looks to strengthen other areas of his team, most notably the defence.

With Luke Shaw, 22, Matteo Darmian, and Daley Blind, both 28, set to leave this summer, the United chief wants to bring in as many as three defenders this summer.

It’s left him with fewer funds to spend in other areas of his team-building and with Scott McTominay, 21, breaking into the first-team, Mourinho believes he has the depth in his midfield he needs.

It’s left City with a clear run at the £50m-rated Napoli midfielder, who under normal circumstances would be looking for a place in Italy’s World Cup finals squad.

With the Azzurri failing to qualify and a new coach to be appointed, Jorginho wants to be the centre of attention. His cause will be helped if City’s plans for a serious tilt at the Champions League next season come to fruition.
