Riyad Mahrez, 25, will not be leaving Leicester City this summer after the club made it clear to his agent that it is too late for them to find a replacement.
Leicester City’s director of football, Jon Rudkin, met with the Algerian winger’s agent and laid out the club’s position. Talks about a new contract will take place in the future but at this moment in time, there is no hurry on either side.
It was a day of claim and counter-claim yesterday.
Photos emerged in the British media in the morning purporting to show Mahrez checking into Chelsea Harbour Hotel. They led to a rash of stories that the PFA Player of the Year was headed for talks with the Blues.
Antonio Conte’s presence in the building fanned the flames of speculation further.
Reports emanating from France suggested Arsenal had made a £30m bid for Mahrez but that Leicester had rejected the offer.. Those reports were strenuously denied by both clubs.
In the end, after a summer when some of Europe’s elite clubs have been linked with the mercurial winger, it looks as if the defending Premier League champions have held onto their man for one more season at least.
