Newcastle United striker Aleksandar Mitrovic is heading toward the St James Park exit with newly-promoted Brighton and Hove Albion prepared to take a chance on the volatile Serbian international.

According to the Daily Mirror, Mitrovic is being frozen out of the Newcastle first team following the Football Association handing out a retrospective three-match ban for elbowing West Ham United midfielder Manuel Lanzini in August.

It’s not his first transgression of this sort with Rafa Benitez’s patience finally running out with Mitrovic.

While the Serb is a fan favourite, he is hardly prolific. In his 67 appearances for the Magpies, he has registered just 17 goals. In his third season with the club, it’s hardly the form which begs the club to renew his contract.

The 23-year-old hasn’t appeared in the first team since his contretempts with Lanzini and with Newcastle finding some form with one defeat in their last five Premier League fixtures.

It’s claimed in the Daily Mirror that Brighton boss Chris Hughton flew to Vienna to watch Mitrovic in Serbia’s 2 – 3 defeat to Austria.

The Seagulls are entering into a phase of the season where they will look to claim points from Everton, West Ham, Southampton, Swansea and Stoke. If they can get to January outside of the relegation zone, signing the Serb may give them the impetus to successfully fight the drop.
