Alphonse Areola has been relegated to a secondary role at PSG and he is open for a move elsewhere. He wanted to leave the Ligue 1 giants this summer, but unfortunately that didn’t happen and he stayed with the reigning France champions as a result.
But it’s not because he didn’t want to move, though. Areola was keen to move to Chelsea and that was confirmed by a direct source: Chelsea’s goalkeeping coach, Christoph Lollichon. Instead, PSG ended signing Kepa Arrazibalaga from Athletic Bilbao from a world-record goalkeeper fee.
Lollichon spoke to Le Figaro and revealed he had spoken to Areola often during the summer. He said Areola wanted to come to Stamford Bridge and that it would have been a pleasure to work with him, but it the end it wasn’t up to him to make the decision. Maurizio Sarri instead chose to acquire Kepa, leaving Areola in a position where he will have to battle with Gianluigi Buffon for the starting role at Paris SG.
That might be hard, though. Buffon played the opening three matches of the season for PSG, but the 25-year-old then took over for the next two so things might be looking up for him. Plus, he also made his international debut on Thursday, helping France to a 0-0 draw against Germany with a superb performance.
