Talks are ongoing with Barcelona over Colombia international Yerry Mina, 23, while Bernard, the former Brazil international, arrived at the club’s Finch Farm facilities to undergo a medical prior to joining the Merseyside club.
Gomes attracted Tottenham’s attention last year but failed to force a move over the line and the 24-year-old midfielder has been hawked around Europe’s top leagues ever since.
A number of other Premier League clubs were linked with the Portugal international, including Arsenal and West Ham United. None of these turned into formal bids for the midfielder, with claims that Barcelona were expecting too high a fee for a player who is surplus to requirements.
While Everton face competition from Lyon over Mina, there’s little or no interest in Gomes. The Toffees hope the prospect of a double-deal will work in their favour during negotiations with the Blaugrana.
If a deal for Mina proves impossible, Everton hold other defensive options ahead of tomorrow’s deadline.
Manchester United’s versatile Argentinean Marcos Rojo, 28, and Kurt Zouma, 23, of Chelsea are two in their sights. The latter would be on a one-year loan deal initially, with the Blues reluctant to commit to a permanent deal at present.
