Atletico Madrid were keen to make a move to bolster their attack following the departure of Kevin Gameiro to Valencia, and they have done exactly that with the signing of Nikola Kalinic, who joins Los Colchoneros from AC Milan.
The former Fiorentina star, who starred one of the most controversial moments in the 2018 FIFA World Cup when he rejected to come into a game during the Group Stage while representing Croatia, spent last season at San Siro but couldn’t thrive. And now he will have another chance to prove himself.
Kalinic is not expected to have a big role at Atletico Madrid, though. Despite the fact Atletico spent most of the summer trying to acquire him, he will likely fill the void of both Fernando Torres and Gameiro as the backup striker for both Antoine Griezmann and Diego Costa.
The towering Croatia international registered six goals in 31 league appearances for AC Milan last season, but was coming off consecutive seasons with 12+ goals playing for Fiorentina. All things considered, he has 33 goals and 13 assists in 100 Serie A appearances throughout his career. This will be his first experience playing in Spain.
Kalinic has also won 42 caps with Croatia and has scored 15 goals.
