The 26-year-old French striker was heavily linked with a move to Manchester United last summer but the FIFA-instigated transfer ban heaped on Atletico Madrid changed Griezmann’s mind about leaving the Spanish capital.
However, it’s being claimed that he will happily move to the Camp Nou provided Ernesto Valverde guarantees Griezmann that he will be a first-choice striker.
The Blaugrana boss is being criticised by fans for what is perceived as ‘defensive’ football, despite the club being four points clear of Valencia and eight ahead of both Madrid clubs in La Liga.
Griezmann’s contract is reported to include a €100m release clause. In today’s market, Valverde believes that is a bargain and wants the Camp Nou hierarchy to act decisively in the summer.
Not that Barcelona are going to have a free run at one of the world’s most coveted strikers. Real Madrid recently made their interest clear while among other suitors will be Manchester United, who are expected for the Frenchman in the summer.
This season, Griezmann has struggled to find his rhythm in front of goal, prompting Diego Simeone to defend his charge in the media following the weekend’s 1 – 0 win at Deportivo La Coruña.
The Argentinean declared himself pleased with 23 points and “just” two goals from his star striker. Third in the table with a misfiring striker is a good position to be in at this stage of the season.
