The Serbian international would be a strong addition to United’s midfield which was roundly criticised last season for being the weak link in Louis Van Gaal’s team. Matic would bring much-needed fight and title-winning experience to Old Trafford as Mourinho seeks to revive the ailing Premier League giants.
Matic returned to West London in 2014 and was a pivotal member of their title winning side. He was however, criticised as Chelsea’s form crumbled last season. The Blues barely scraped into the top ten and are looking to rebuild with Antonio Conte’s appointment as manager.
The Italian is rumoured to be keen on bringing N’Golo Kante, 25, to Stamford Bridge with the French international’s energetic defensive midfield play at odds with Matic’s laconic style.
As a key player during Leicester’s surprise rise to the top of the Premier League, Kante has attracted the attention of many of Europe’s biggest clubs with Paris St Germain rumoured to have already offered him a five-year double-your-money deal.
If Matic re-joins former boss Mourinho at Old Trafford, Chelsea may be forced to better that offer if they are to tempt one of Europe’s hottest properties into a move.
