Arsenal and Manchester City are both monitoring Real Betis left-back Junior Firpo, according to Sky Sports.

The 22-year-old Spaniard has been putting in eye-catching performances as Real Betis sit two points outside the Europa League places. City and Arsenal are both keen to fill holes in their respective squads.

The Premier League champions must contend with the repeated absences of Benjamin Mendy, 24, through injury. Pep Guardiola is desperate to sign reinforcements who are not only capable deputies but can push the incumbents in his XI to continually improve performance levels.

Arsenal, meanwhile, are looking for a long-term replacement for Nacho Monreal, 32. The Spaniard is close to returning to the first XI to the relief of supporters with Sead Kolasinac, 25, struggling for consistency.

With his loping stride, Firop is an ideal candidate for both clubs whose coaches demand attacking instincts from their full-backs. Not that they are set to have this battle their own way. Newcastle United offers the Dominican Republic-born defender regular first-team football and with a number of Spanish players, as well as Rafa Benitez, the chance of settling into English football quickly.

However, his performances in his first full La Liga season suggest he is ready for a bigger stage than the Magpies can offer.
