The saga rumbles on. After the drama of the collapsed deadline day deal, Manchester City haven’t given up signing the wantaway Arsenal striker Alexis Sanchez, 28, this season. The Citizens, according to ESPN, will return with a £20m bid in January, hoping the Gunners will be tempted into recouping some funds on the sale of the Chilean.
Arsene Wenger observed earlier this week that he expected Arsenal to spend £70m replacing the Chilean. Potentially, they may need to do the same with Mesut Ozil and Jack Wilshere; Stan Kroenke may need to inject funds into the club for the first time during his tenure.
Sanchez endured a miserable fortnight. The hope of a move to City where he will once again link up with his former Barcelona boss, Pep Guardiola, was crushed as Arsenal’s €100m capture of Thomas Lemar, 21, fell through at the last minute.
Add to that back-to-back defeats in the World Cup qualifiers, Chilean pundits calling him “overweight” and Sanchez could be forgiven for wanting to disappear into a darkened room with only a bottle of Jack Daniels for company.
The prospect of returning to Arsenal may not fill him with joy but Arsene Wenger expects a motivated Alexis Sanchez at training tomorrow. The lens of the world’s media will be pointed at him to see how it pans out.
